A closer look at how Surfside has gone green.
We’re committed to preserving the beautiful environment that Surfside calls home so that our guests can continue to enjoy Minnesota’s scenic North Shore for generations to come.
Geo thermal heat pumps
In an effort to reduce both propane and electrical consumption, Surfside on Lake Superior has partnered with Summit Mechanical of Duluth, a regional leader in geothermal technologies, to install geothermal heat recovery systems in the following locations:
- The Waves of Superior Spa & Conference Center, cutting combined propane and electrical use in this facility by 70%
- The Coho Café & Bakery, saving 2200 gallons of propane per year.
Resort facilities and amenities
We all play an important role in protecting the environment. Below you’ll find some of the ways we are working to reduce Surfside’s footprint:
- An MPCA-award winning, privately operated wastewater treatment facility, under a license of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, helping us ensure that we keep Lake Superior the cleanest freshwater lake in the world.
- All townhomes are heated by 98% efficient furnaces and are cooled by high efficiency, mini-split air conditioning systems.
- James Hardie® siding and trim is used on every Surfside building. These materials don’t require the use of native resources to produce, are low in toxicity, support regional economies, limit material transportation needs, eliminate VOCs and are part of a a Zero to Landfill project aimed at reducing amount of raw materials waste sent to the landfills by half.
- Florescent light bulbs are used in all fixtures in which they are applicable, along with dimmers on fixtures that use incandescent bulbs.
Guest services
Taking care of the planet is every bit as important to us as taking care of our guests. Because of this, we offer the following guest services in an effort to reduce our impact on the environment while strengthening your guest experience:
- Organic skin care products made by Eminence in the Waves of Superior Spa.
- Guest bathroom amenities that contain no sulfates, no parabens, no phthalates, no artificial colors and no animal testing.
- Towels made of bamboo fiber instead of cotton, providing softer, longer and stronger threads, an extended useful life by 1/3rd over cotton, and a 25% shorter drying time than cotton.
- Housekeeping services provided upon guest requests in an effort to conserve water and reduce the amount of chemicals used in the cleaning process.
